A Schuylkill County driver was killed Thursday morning in a crash along a busy county roadway in which his vehicle was crushed between a tractor-trailer rig and another car.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the deceased as Scott L. Bennett, 33, of Frackville. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 6:02 a.m. at the intersection of state routes 61 and 895 in Deer Lake Borough.

Troopers said David C. Schatz Jr., 44, of Schuylkill Haven, was traveling on 895 in a 2009 Hyundai Sonata while Bennett was southbound on 61 operating a 2012 Chrysler 200 and approaching the intersection.

Troopers said Schatz entered the intersection and struck the side of Bennett's car. On impact Bennett's car traveled into the northbound lane where it was struck broadside on the passenger side by a 1997 Mack truck driven by John S. Hoover, 44, of Reading. The truck pushed the Chrysler northbound where the two units struck the Hyundai which had come to rest in the northbound lane.

Schatz was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, where he was treated and released. Hoover sustained minor injuries.

Traffic had to be re-routed around the busy intersection for several hours until the investigation was completed and the wreckage cleared.

No charges were filed as a result of the crash.
