A Nesquehoning man was killed after being involved in a spectacular crash late Tuesday night along SR93 in that community.

Jeffrey Rider Jr., 21, was pronounced dead at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was flown by MedEvac helicopter.Police said Rider was operating a 2003 Volkswagen GTI. According to police, he was traveling north on Route 93 at an apparent high rate of speed when he left the roadway and impacted numerous trees.Nesquehoning police said the accident was reported to police at 11:18 p.m.The crash was first reported by a passing motorist, who reported finding a car ripped in half and a person lying along the roadway.The first to arrive on scene was Nesquehoning Police Officer Carl Breiner, who confirmed the initial reports.Members of the Nesquehoning ambulance and Lehighton paramedics treated the victim at the scene before flying him to a Lehigh Valley area trauma center.The Nesquehoning and New Columbus fire companies responded to the scene supplying lighting and shutting down the roadway.The victim was apparently driving along the roadway atop the Broad Mountain when he lost control of the Volkswagen. The car left the east berm impacting with a tree, which ripped the car in half, hurling the second half of the car a distance before that section impacted with a tree. The engine of the car was found about 60 feet north of that section in a creek.Nesquehoning police were assisted at the scene by police officers from Jim Thorpe and Weatherly.
