Coaldale woman faces retail theft charges

Sahara Welfel, 21, of 327 Ridge Terrace, Coaldale, faces charges from an incident which took place on Dec. 24 at 4:32 p.m. at Family Dollar in Lansford. Charges of retail theft were filed by Officer Christopher Ondrus.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, here's what happened;On Dec, 24 at 4:32 p.m., Ondrus was dispatched to the Family Dollar store for a retail theft. He spoke with assistant manager Jayne Chapman, who had detained the suspect, Sahara Welfel. Chapman told Ondrus she saw Welfel walk into the store with a flat stomach, but after Welfel had walked around the store, she had a bulge under her jacket.Welfel went to the checkout and paid for one item. As she was leaving the store, Chapman approached her and asked her to open her coat. Welfel said she had a sweatshirt under her jacket. Chapman asked to see it, and Welfel pulled out a size-7 Bugle Boy fleece hooded zipper sweatshirt, priced at $7.50, and a Kidgets one-piece camouflage pajama set, size 4T, valued at $4.50.Ondrus arrested Welfel, and took her to the police station, where she declined to give a statement.A background check revealed Welfel has a previous retail theft conviction, making this offense a misdemeanor. Welfel was picked up by police on Feb. 23 at 3:14 a.m. at the Turkey Hill convenience store in Lansford. She was arrested and taken to Carbon County prison.
