In this time of financial difficulty, every girl deserves to dress like a princess for her spring formal.
As the 2013 school prom season approaches, organizers and volunteers from the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network are collecting gently used gowns and accessories for "The Second Annual Community Belle of the Ball."
Coordinators Deb Davis and her mother Gwen Evans say that last year's event resulted in over 220 gowns being given to deserving young women, saying that the program was a "tremendous success."
"I remember a girl coming for a dress last year stating that her parents couldn't afford a prom dress," said Evans. "I saw a prom photo of one of the girls who got a dress last year. She looked so beautiful."
Anyone wanting to donate gowns, shoes or jewelry can drop items off at the Zion Lutheran Church, Greenwood and Mauch Chunk streets in Tamaqua after calling Davies at (570) 668-4554 or Evans at (570) 668-0666.
Evans says that some of the dresses donated still have the tags on them.
"This type of event should be held in every community," says Davis.
Items will be distributed Friday, March 1 from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, March 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Snacks and refreshments will also be served during the distribution.
The organizers say that any girls who can't make either distribution day are encouraged to call them to arrange another time to browse and select items.
