(Editor's Note: In an effort to inform our readers of various governmental offices that are subject to election/re-election in 2013, this is the second of a five-part series relating to the election process.)

Municipal voting in the 12 boroughs in Carbon County will feature races for the mayor's offices, borough council seats and the tax collector positions.

The following terms of office will expire at the end of the year and will be voted on by the voters in the May 21 Primary Election and the Nov. 5 General Election:

Beaver Meadows

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor William E. Hines, four-year term; council members Robert Rossi, Jeffrey Bobish, Brian Katchur and Mary Rayno; and Tax Collector Michael Komishock, who was appointed to the unexpired term of E. Katherine Moro, who resigned, four-year term. The borough voters will also elect two auditors this year, one for a six-year term and the other for a four-year term.

Bowmanstown

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Keith Billig, four-year term; council members William Ravert, Burdell Steigerwalt, Troy Muffley and Chad Everett; and Tax Collector Maria Smith, four-year term.

East Side

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Gerald Jones Jr., four-year term; council members Sharon Mrozinski, Elizabeth Berger and Helen Jones; and Tax Collector Lisa A. Jones, four-year term.

Jim Thorpe

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Michael Sofranko, four-year term; council members Gregory Strubinger, Jay Miller, who was appointed to the unexpired term of Justin Yaich, who resigned, Joanne Klitsch and Kyle Sheckler, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Terry McElmoyle, four-year term.

Lansford

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Ron Hood Jr., four-year term; council members Samantha Yasson, Lenny Kovach and Danielle Smith, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Daniel Wynn, four-year term.

Lehighton

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Donald Rehrig, four-year term; council members Scott T. Rehrig, John Bird and George Kogut, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Mary Strohl, four-year term.

Nesquehoning

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor K. Tony Walck, four-year term; council members Mary Fox, David Hawk and Rose M. Walck, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Patricia Vito, four-year term.

Palmerton

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Christopher D. Olivia, who was appointed to the unexpired term of Brad Doll, who resigned, four-year term; council members Jason J. Behler, Richard Nothstein, Michael Ballard, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Randolph M. Gursky, who resigned, and Kris Hoffner, four-year terms; Councilwoman Holly Sell, who was appointed to fill Olivia's seat when the latter became mayor, two-year term; and Tax Collector Diane Andreas, four-year term.

Parryville

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Dean Emery, four-year term; council members Jennifer Emrey, Cathy Hawk and Jennifer Borger, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Penni Szoke, four-year term.

Summit Hill

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Paul McArdle, four-year term; council members John O'Gurek Jr., William Chapman and William O'Gurek Jr., who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Harry Miller, who resigned, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Alice Kane, four-year term.

A fifth council position will be up for grabs due to the resignation of Francis O'Gorman. That will be a two-year term. The borough council has yet to fill the unexpired term of O'Gorman.

Weatherly

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: council members Norman Richie, Harold Farrow, Cecelia Gower and Joseph D'Andrea, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Sandra Eroh, four-year term. Mayor Tom Connors is the only mayor of the 12 Carbon County municipalities who is not up for re-election/election. He was elected to a four-year term in 2011.

Weissport

Terms expiring this year and subject to election are those of: Mayor Jonathan Troutman, four-year term; council members Gene Kershner, Timothy Rehrig and Paulette Watson, four-year terms; and Tax Collector Theresa Troutman, four-year term.

Persons aspiring to run for public office are required to circulate petitions to obtain signatures from voters of either the Democratic or Republican parties in order to get their names on the ballot. Ten signatures are required.

The first day to circulate and file nomination papers is Tuesday, Feb. 19, and the last date to circulate and file them is Tuesday, March 12. For persons wanting to register to vote, the registration period is open from now until April 22.
