Furious Weatherly rally falls short

Outstanding field goal and foul shooting from both teams highlighted Mahanoy Area's 57-53 win over the Lady Wreckers of Weatherly Thursday night.

In the first half, the Lady Bears' Shaina Leshko was five-for-five from three point land while Anne Swokel added eight points on perfect shooting from the floor and the line to pace Mahanoy to a 14-point advantage at the break."We had issues defensively early and we were simply not aggressive enough on the wing with our match up zone," said Wreckers' coach Paul Hadzick. "We tried two different girls to stop Leshko and both were unsuccessful."The Bears 9-2 run at the start of the second quarter coupled with poor shooting by Weatherly contributed to the large halftime deficit that appeared to be too much for the Wreckers to overcome."We worked well for good shots," said Mahanoy coach Tom Tobin. "I always tell my girls to take the open shots and we were really cashing in."In the third quarter, the Bears tried to help Weatherly back in the game with seven turnovers, but Weatherly shot just 4-for-22. Macey Brown's top of the key three with 14 seconds left increased the Bears' lead to 15 at 46-31 at the three quarter mark. With the start of the fourth quarter, the Wreckers (5-13, 1-10) switched to a man to man defense and it worked."We think we made them tired because with man they have to move much more to get open," said Hadzick. "Plus, we took it up a notch on offense."It was now Weatherly's turn to fire up its shooting. After Jess Polchin's three-point basket and foul shot got the Wreckers within 10, it was the Dom Adamczyk show. First she nailed a long three at the 2:13 mark to make the score 50-43. Then after Swokel sank both ends of a one and one for the Bears, Adamczyk hit a second trey to get Weatherly within six."'They hit some deep threes because our "D" didn't get out to defend fast enough," said Tobin.Mahanoy (5-13, 1-10) kept its precarious lead by shooting six for six from the foul line, all in one-and-one bonus situations.Adamczyck bombed her third three in a row with 38 seconds left to bring the score to 54-49, but the Bears' Erin Davidson's two free throws iced the game with 21 seconds to go making Kelly Parker's banked three at the buzzer for Weatherly irrelevant to the outcome."Obviously, our strategy at the end was to foul and hope they would miss, but give them credit, they made every one," said Hadzick. "It's too bad because Dom played great. She shot and rebounded well and took care of the ball. I don't think she realizes how good she can be."Mahanoy's Lesko led all scorers with 19 points. Weatherly's scoring was topped by Adamczyk's 15 followed by Erin Dougherty who threw in 13.Mahanoy AreaBrown 4-0-0-11, Bisco 3-2-4-8, Davidson 2-2-4-6, Leshko 7-0-0-19, Swokel 3-7-8-13, Lawrence 0-0-0-0, Babinsky 0-0-0-0.
