Weatherly Borough residents are in for a 31 percent tax increase in 2014, according to the details of the final budget passed on Monday night by the borough council.

The new spending plan increases real estate taxes by 1.5 mills – from 4.8 to 6.3 mills. It passed on a 5-2 vote and drew opposition from Mayor Tom Connors, who said the council did not spend enough time discussing the budget.

The action also drew criticism from some borough residents who questioned council's decision to grant raises of 25-cents-per-hour to all of the borough workers.

Officials said the tax increase was needed because of rising costs the borough faces, as well as the loss of some earned income tax on the revenue side of the budget.
