Lansford targets trash deadbeats

Residents of Lansford who aren't paying their garbage collection fees will have a surprise coming in the mail.

At Tuesday's regular council meeting, the board approved action pertaining to 86 delinquent sanitation accounts.Solicitor Michael Greek will pursue placing liens on those properties due to nonpayment and those in arrears will be notified. The borough will pay $4,011.90 in lien fees, but those fees will be passed on to the respective property owners.Delinquent sanitation accounts in Lansford total $110,000.In other action, council formally accepted a bid of $7,500 for a property at 860 E. Patterson St. The winning bidder, identified as Mrs. Bales, resides in the same neighborhood.In addition, the board approved minutes from seven previous council meetings dating back to April.President Rose Mary Cannon explained that the board was without the services of a secretary for quite some time and, as a result, the minutes weren't getting done. Tuesday's action, therefore, brought the records up to date in time for year end.In a related matter, council member Mary Soberick expressed desire that meeting minutes be regarded as more formal and written in a format that reflects it."They're a document that gets a seal and should not just be notations," remarked Soberick.Since Tuesday's meeting was the final regular session for 2013 and some new faces will enter council chambers in the coming year, Cannon offered best wishes to the incoming mayor and new members.Cannon also announced that a brief meeting will take place Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. for the purpose of adopting a budget and any other pressing matters that might need attention.She said 2013 was a good year in terms of the financial picture.Cannon also made mention of important projects under way that are expected to continue into 2014, some utilizing Department of Community and Economic Development grant funding.Those projects include a pole building for American Fire Company No. 1, an ADA-accessible ramp for borough hall and new windows in the police department.Cannon also said the purchase of a power generator is on the wish list as well.
