A Tamaqua man, Jorge Martinez Gutieres, 30, of 400 Hazle St., spent some time in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville this weekend.

Borough police were dispatched to that address at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, for a reported domestic assault in progress. On scene they found a woman outside crying and visibly upset. Despite a language barrier she identified herself to police. The woman's eyes were bloodshot and she had numerous marks and bruises on her face and left hand, as well as an injury to her left leg that caused her to limp. She indicated she had been involved in a fight with Gutieres, her boyfriend.

When approached by officers, Gutieres indicated nothing had happened, although he too had scratches on his arms and hands. He also had a noticeable odor of alcohol on his person.

Medina and Gutieres were transported back to the police station in separate cruisers. Once there officers were able to contact an interpreter and learned the woman had provided her mother with a ride home to Reading, causing her boyfriend to become jealous. The couple became involved in a verbal altercation which turned physical. She told police he threatened to kill her if she ever contacted law enforcement.

He was charged with simple assault and making terroristic threats. He was arraigned before duty District Judge James Riley. Bail was set at $20,000. Unable to post bond, Gutieres was lodged in the county prison.
