Another snow day

Motorists were prepared for another day of tricky travel, as a second storm pushes through the region today.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory until 5 p.m. today because "heavy snowfall" was expected. A total of two to four inches was forecast for much of the coverage area, with slightly higher totals possible in the elevations.Because of the timing of the storm, all school districts in Carbon County, as well as Pleasant Valley School District in Monroe and Northwestern Lehigh and Northern Lehigh school districts in Lehigh County were closed as of 6:30 this morning, while Tamaqua Area closed its elementary schools and planned to dismiss the middle school and high school at 10:30 a.m.Some students and their parents are taking advantage of the second snow day to prepare for Christmas.Jay Gilbert of Coaldale said that yesterday he and his children went through old toys to see what could be donated to the Salvation Army. Today, they are doing the same with clothing that has not been worn in a while.Lisa Stroup of Palmerton said she was going to catch up on baking.Palmerton's school board meeting was also postponed until Dec. 17; and Our Lady of The Angels Academy in Lansford postponed today's Christmas performance. The school's play will now be performed at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at St. Katharine Drexel Church, Lansford, and at 12:45 p.m., Thursday at the church.Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews were out in force throughout the day.According to Ron Young, district press officer, in a press release this morning, PennDOT has temporarily reduced the speed limits on U.S. 22 in Lehigh and Northampton counties between Interstate 78 and approximately 25th Street; Pa. Route 33 in Northampton County between Interstate 78 and the Monroe County line; and Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties between exits 10 and 75.PennDOT also urges motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel to help crews keep the roads passable and treated during the storm.Driving in winter weather can be a challenge and motorists should remember to keep a safe distance between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them.The rest of this week looks clear, but cold, with highs during the day only reaching mid-20s, and plummeting into the single digits at night.The next chance of a wintry mess comes this weekend, as the National Weather Service forecasts a 60 percent chance of rain and snow during the day Saturday and rain, snow and freezing rain likely that night.
