One person was injured and three people were left homeless as a result of a fast moving fire in Middleport Saturday night. The fire occurred shortly before midnight at the home of Richard Stephens, 210 Winfield Drive. Stephens, his wife, and her son, who suffered minor burns to his hand, are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Firefighters spent an hour bringing the blaze under control but were unable to save the Stephens home, which suffered extensive interior damage. The cause of the fire will be investigated by a state police fire marshall.
Assisting the Blythe Township Fire Companies (Middleport, Kaska and Cumbola) were firefighters from Mary-D, Tuscarora, Pottsville and Tamaqua. Also providing assistance at the scene were the Tamaqua Rescue Squad and EMS units from Pottsville and Schuylkill Haven. The Tamaqua Salvation Army was also at the scene, offering assistance to the victims and the firefighters.
The injured stepson was treated at the Schuylkill Medical Center.
