PV Tip-Off Tourney

Jim Thorpe-Marian

Marian used a balanced attack and a quick start to defeat Jim Thorpe, 54-37, in the Panther Valley Tournament consolation game.

Anthony Agosti paced the Colts with 19 points, including five three-pointers, as Marian jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter.

Nico Agosti added 10 points while freshman Ethan Kuczynski chipped in eight points in the victory.

Bryce Micciche paced the Olympians with 10 points.

Pleasant Vy.-WV West

Pleasant Valley picked up a hard-fought win over Wyoming Valley West in its season opener, 57-55.

The Bears held off a 29-point effort from the Spartans' Jamie Calloway for the victory. The sharpshooter nailed 17 points in the fourth frame to keep the Bears on the edge, however Bryan Sharpe's eight and Marquis Brown's six points in the period proved to be enough.

For the game, Brown led the Bears with 16 points, while Eric Mikulski followed with 14 and Sharpe added 13.

The Bears pulled out a 62-40 win in the JV game.

Columbia-Montour Vo Tech garnered a 63-45 win over Weatherly behind the scoring of Justin Zumerling, who poured in 30 points.

Dylan Larkin drilled five three pointers for the winners, as well to assist with 18 points.

Meanwhile, the Wreckers got a team-high 18 points from Luke Reiner, with brother Josh Reiner adding 13.

Tim Busher's 12 points in the JV contest led the junior Wreckers to a 30-28 preliminary win.

Pocono Charter-Tamaqua

Tamaqua started its hardwood season in fine fashion defeating Pocono Charter, 80-14, in non-league action.

Brett Kosciolek led all scorers with 19 points for the Blue Raiders. Russell Blaker had the hot hand from outside, drilling four threes for 12 points. Teammates Nate MacDonald's 11 and Bo Rottet's 10 were also in double figures.

Tamaqua rolled to a 63-22 win in the preliminary contest as Connor Hartung netted 17.

Palmerton girls improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 47-19 win over East Stroudsburg North.

The Bombers' Madison Mummey scored 18 points to lead all scorers. Jade Farquhar followed with 14 and Janel Tracy chipped in 10.

It was the season-opener for East Stroudsburg North.

WRESTLING

Palmerton atRough Rider Tourney

Palmerton took part in the Catasauqua-hosted Rough Rider Invitational over the weekend and had some impressive showings throughout their lineup.

Josh Evans received the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for his efforts at the 138-pound weight class. Evans finished as the champion of his weight class by going 4-0 on the day with two pins, a medical forfeit and a decision over a state qualifier from a year ago.

Zac Graver also won his individual weight class at 170, earning a pin, a tech fall, a decision and a medical forfeit.

Zack Christman finished second at 152, after he went 4-1 on the day with two majors, a pin and a tech fall.

Jared Mooney, a freshman, wrestling at 160, managed a pin over a district place winner from one season ago as well.

Palmerton will next return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Palisades to open up Colonial League competition.

Lehighton, Northern Lehigh at Bullet Invitational

Lehighton and Northern Lehigh both battled at the highly touted Bullet Invitational over the weekend.

The Bulldogs came home with a fourth place finish as a team, while the Indians ended up in eight.

Colton Rex (106) and Nate Farber (160) led the Bulldogs with second place honors, while Ryan Farber (138), Austin Arnold (170) and Cameron Kates (heavyweight) followed with third place finishes. Teammate CJ Young (145) grabbed a fourth place finish, while Matt Schmall (132), Stephan Scheib (195) and Jason Schaffer (220) all sported a fifth place medal.

Connor Frey (182) led the Indians with a second place finish, while teammates Zach Kemmerer (120) and Tyler Cann (160) grabbed third place honors. Dominik Mystkowski (170) picked up a fifth place medal.

Tamaqua in Bloomsburg Tournament

The Tamaqua Blue Raiders got their season started on Saturday at the Bloomsburg DKI Tournament.

Colin Mashack (126) and Dylan Rynkiewicz were the top performers on the day for the Raiders, both going 3-1. All three of Mashack's wins came by pin.

Tanner McHugh also had a nice day for the Raiders, going 3-2 on the day and Collin Moyer put forth a solid effort going 3-3.

Northwestern at Nazareth Invitational

Northwestern opened the season with a seventh place team finish in the Nazareth Invitational.

Ryan Dengler (113 pounds) highlighted the Tigers visit to the tournament with a third place finish.

Alex Russo (182) fell just short of a placing in the individual tourament.
