Bowmanstown council honors mayor retiring after 28 years

Bomansown Borough Council honored mayor Keith Billig Tuesday night for 28 years on council.

When asked about his impending retirement, Billig said,"Well, it's been an experience. You know, going from not knowing hardly anything about the law or about government and getting thrown into something like this. It was quite a learning experience."Billig explained that, back in 1985, he'd been switched to afternoon shift on his job and had therefore been forced to take a break from serving his last few months on borough council. He told the council he wouldn't run for another term and simply put the matter aside. However, much to his disbelief, he says, he went to work on that year's election day and came home to find out that his name had been written in on the unopposed ballot, suddenly making him the borough's mayor instead."I figured I'd give it a try and see what happens," Billig said.He was reelected each term afterward but decided over a year ago that he wouldn't seek re-election again."I never thought it would go for 28 years," Billig said, adding that it was time for someone else to take over.He also said he is looking forward to retirement, then laughed that, "I feel good. Now when the telephone rings, it doesn't matter."

Bowmanstown Council President, and soon-to-be mayor, William Ravert hands retiring mayor, Keith Billig an appreciation plaque and gift certificate for his 28 years of service.
