A crash that involved three tractor trailers on Interstate 80 in Kidder Township, Carbon County, claimed the life of one of the drivers on Wednesday morning.
State police at the Fern Ridge barracks were summoned to the wreckage at about 5:50 a.m. Police said the accident happened in a foggy stretch of the interstate.
Police said this morning the details of the crash, including the name of the deceased, are not available, apparently pending the notification of family members.
One report indicated the crash happened in the westbound lanes of the interstate after one rig struck the driver's side of a slower-moving tractor trailer while it was attempting to pass it in the left lane. The impact caused the slower-moving vehicle to become disabled and it reportedly stopped in the right lane where the third tractor trailer was unable to stop in time.
The driver of the third rig tried to avoid the stopped vehicle, but was killed when it crashed into the back of the stopped tractor trailer.
The accident closed part of I-80 in Kidder for several hours, causing major traffic problems on alternative routes.
