Monday evening, the Lehighton and Jim Thorpe golf teams walked onto the Mahoning Valley Country Club golf course as non-league foes one last time.
Lehighton posted a 632-649 victory over the Olympians.
Starting next fall, Lehighton will no longer play within the realms of the Mountain Valley Conference, but join Jim Thorpe as members of the Schuylkill League.
It's a move that Jim Thorpe coach Jim Hauze is very happy about.
"We're excited to have a team that we're competitive with and that's competitive with us," Hauze said. "The kids seem to know each other. They seem to get along with each other. It's nice having some familiarity.
"I'm excited that we're going to be playing each other twice in a year instead of just once."
If Monday's match-up was sign for what's to come down the road, that's going to be twice as nice.
Jordan Knappenberger paced the Indians (2-5 overall; 1-5 MVC) by grabbing medalist honors with an 86. Knappenberger had the lone score under 90. After that, things looked like they got a little rough for the rest of the individuals as the scores ranged from 94 to 125 within the top six. Brett Luciana led the Olympians (1-6) with a 98.
The scores may undoubtedly strike a nerve or two with any head golf coach, but Lehighton's Matt Fisher was able to overlook those for a few moments to state the reason that may count the most each time the two programs will meet in the future.
"The kids seemed to have fun, which is great," Fisher said. "Jim Thorpe is always a good competitor to host. They are great kids. I think they're pretty much same caliber as Lehighton kids are and I really enjoy having them out at the golf course here."
"I'm really looking forward to jumping into the Schuylkill League next year and being able to play them both home and away and play some of the other comparable school districts that are the size of our program."
