Killed during alleged burglary

An 18-year-old teen, who allegedly broke into a Schuylkill County home, was shot dead by the homeowner during a confrontation.

State police at Frackville said the incident occurred about 5:29 p.m. on Saturday at 57 Steep Mountain Road, New Ringgold, in East Brunswick Township.Troopers identified the victim as Zachary Foster, of 150 N. Market St., New Ringgold, a neighbor.The homeowner and shooter was identified as Curt Stein, 49.The investigation, being handled by Trooper John D. Powis, is ongoing. No charges have been filed to date. Troopers are working to determine if the shooting was justified.The location of the home where the shooting occurred is off a one-lane gravel road. The home is a two-story structure and is not easily accessible. It carries a New Ringgold address because of the post office, but is actually closer to the McKeansburg area.According to troopers Foster damaged two exterior doors before forcing his way into the home.While he was in the home Stein and Melissa Booth, 46, who resides at the home with him, arrived home.Stein observed evidence of a possible entry into his house. He had a handgun with him, which he is licensed to carry.Stein entered the home with his handgun and confronted Foster, who was not wearing any kind of disguise. A struggled ensued between the two and Stein shot Foster in the head.Reportedly, Foster and Stein knew each other and were neighbors.Stein has a sign posted on a tree outside his home which reads, "No trespassing may result in severe injury or death keep out."Foster was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Scott Clews. County coroner Dr. David J. Moylan arrived on scene some time later. Foster was officially pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m.Moylan conducted a virtual autopsy at his office in New Philadelphia on Sunday morning. An autopsy was scheduled for this morning at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, in Salisbury Township.Moylan said a single gunshot wound to the head was apparent, although he could not determine the caliber.Assisting Powis in his investigation is the state police major case team, Schuylkill County detectives and the district attorney's office.
