Public statements issued over Ross fatal shootings

Two separate statements were issued in regards to the Ross Township shootings last Monday, where David Fleetwood, Chestnuthill Township supervisor and Ross Township zoning officer, Gerard Kozic and James LaGuardia lost their lives.

In an official statement released Friday, Aug. 9 of Dave Fleetwood's family, it states "On behalf of the family of Dave Fleetwood, I have been asked to thank all who have offered their condolences. In this time of grief the family respectfully requests that all members of the press refrain from attempting to contact the family and please respect their privacy."It was signed by Carl (Chuck) Gould II, Chairman of the Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors.Another statement was released by Bernie Kozen, the executive director of the West End Park and Open Space Commission, who was responsible for subduing the shooter and thereby responsible for saving other lives."As everyone knows, I was present at the shooting that took place at the Ross Township meeting."I am eternally grateful for the outpouring of support toward myself and my family, however I feel we should be focusing on the victims and their families during this time. They need the support and prayers more than any of us will ever know."It is time for us to come together, to unite and stand by those most affected by this senseless, unjustified tragedy. By doing so, we can ensure that the shooter doesn't win a second time by destroying the bonds of our community."I will make no further statements or interviews about the event or the accused at this time. The ongoing investigation and probable criminal case against Newell is of primary importance."It is time for us to move on through the grieving and healing process. We thank you for your thoughts, and most importantly, appreciate your respect and privacy at this time."
