The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual picnic at Leiby's Grove, enjoying a pot luck dinner and games, led by Linda Leiby.
President June Leiby conducted a short business session, reminding members of the Aug. 27 tour of Stonehedge Gardens. Members should be at the gardens by 6 p.m.
Club members participated in the Schuylkill County Fair, with several winning ribbons. This year's theme was "A Week at the Fair." Entries were in the Artistic Arrangements section of the Floral Exhibits Division. The categories were farm animals, using fresh flowers, greens, hay and a farm animal as a feature; tractors, using fresh flowers and greens in the colors of John Deere, Farmall or Allis Chalmers, with a tractor accessory; cooking contest, using three or more fresh flowers and greens with a kitchen utensil as an accessory; royalty, using three or more fresh flowers and greens with a crown accessory; and wreath, using dried flowers and fruit on a grapevine wreath.
Winners included specialty awards for Evelyn Adams, Best of Show and first place for her entry in the royalty category; and Judy Kellner, Harvest ribbon (judges choice). Category winners were: farm animals Judy Kellner, first; Evelyn Adams, second, and Linda Leiby, third place; tractors Judy Kellner, first place and Evelyn Adams, third; cooking contest June Leiby, second place; royalty Evelyn Adams, first and Judy Kellner, second; wreath Evelyn Adams, first place and Judy Kellner, third place.
New to the fair this year was the Agricultural Education Horticultural Exhibits for FFA students.
Cross country teams

East End auxiliary
Supporters of the East End Fire Company are in the process of starting an auxiliary unit. A planning session is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the fire company. For more information, call (570) 778-7407.
The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network is sponsoring an ecumenical evening of music, message and fellowship on Aug. 17 at the Tamaqua Train Station. The evening will begin at 6 p.m.
Free ice cream will be served at the conclusion of the program
Rain date will be 6 p.m. on Aug. 18.
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA. Sunday school is held at 9:15 a.m., at the church.
