Day of prayer
Bethany Evangelical Congregational will be hosting a National Day of Prayer Event on May 2. This year's theme is "Pray For America," based on Matthew 12:21.
A bill establishing the National Day of Prayer was signed in 1952 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, to be set each year by the sitting president. In 1988, the law was amended establishing the first Thursday in May for the observance.
Tamaqua's event will be held at noon at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St. The public is welcome to attend.
The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 9 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 35 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session.
Chaplain Kathleen Valentine provided the invocation and reports were offered by secretary Gloria Gerhard and treasurer Shirley Becker. Get well cards were sent to Ellie Zakrewsky, Jane Springer, Mae Schock, Manny Garcia and Jim Valentine.
Members were treated to creme puffs, courtesy of Gloria Gerhard and Bill Morrison, and coffee, donated by Madeline Heffelfinger.
The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.
