Northwestern pulled out narrow victories over Tamaqua in both baseball and softball action on Monday.

BASEBALL

Tamaqua-Northwestern

Nick Rodriguez delivered what turned out to be the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Northwestern to a 6-5 non-league victory over visiting Tamaqua.

Rodriguez sparked the Tigers' attack with two singles, a double, a stolen base and an RBI. Richard Perry (single, double, two runs scored) and Collin Breidinger (single, double, run scored, RBI) contributed to the Northwestern win.

The Blue Raiders' Matt Roberts recorded three singles and a runs scored. Matt Michoff added a single, double and three RBIs.

Northwestern jumps to 2-1 on the season. Tamaqua falls to 1-1.

Nazareth-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley started strong and got a dominant pitching performance from Dan Hrbek in a 4-1 non-league win over Nazareth.

Hrbek struck out 10 in seven innings and held Nazareth to one run on four hits while also adding a double and an RBI at the plate.

Howie Stevens went two-for-three with a double and an RBI for the Bears, who move to 3-1 on the season.

For Pleasant Valley, Kelsey Miczak had two singles and a run scored while Madison Shaneberger chipped in with two singles and a RBI.

Northwestern rode a strong performance from starting pitcher Lydia Danner to edge Tamaqua 2-0 in non-league action.

Danner tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out 13. Lindsey Papp had an RBI single for the Tigers.

Taylor Fritz and Alexis Boyer had the two hits for the Blue Raiders.

Kutztown-Jim Thorpe

Kutztown posted a 4-1 non-league win over Jim Thorpe.

Brandon Huffman and Matt Miller earned a forfeit win in doubles action for the Olympians.

With the loss, Jim Thorpe falls to 2-4 this season.
