The Sixth Annual Hunter Meckes Memorial Soccer Tournament will be held Sunday, April 14, at the Lehighton Area High School soccer fields. The event starts at 8 a.m. U-9 to U-18 teams will be playing. D.J. Larry will be spinning tunes and there refreshments offered by Jim Thorpe girls and soccer teams, Lehighton Booster Club and American Kettle Corn. Proceeds from a basket event will be donated to purchase a bench and a tree in Hunter's name at the playground at the L.B. Morris Elementary School, where Hunter had attended. Also Printing 4-U will be offering Hunter Meckes tee shirts and hoodies. There will be swag tag and Maui Wowii and Schuylkill Valley Sports.
Proceeds from the soccer event will fund scholarships in the name of Hunter Meckes, which will be presented to seniors in Lehighton and Jim Thorpe schools at end of school year award assemblies.
The event is being coordinated by Sherry Meckes, with the assistance of the Lehighton Soccer Club. Meckes hosts the event every year so that her son's name will never be forgotten.
Hunter Meckes died in an accident on Jan. 27, 2003. His mother has organized soccer tournament events for the past five years to raise funds for scholarships in his name because Hunter loved to play soccer.
