Five defendants in pending driving under the influence (DUI) cases were among six persons to enter guilty pleas Thursday morning in Carbon County court.

Senior Judge Richard W. Webb accepted the pleas. He also placed four first time offenders in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) probation program.

Those who entered pleas included:

Josiah T. Bortlick, 28, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested for DUI on Jan. 28 along Blakeslee Blvd. in Mahoning Township. Give a test, the result was .19BAC. It was a second offense for sentencing purposes but his third overall, Webb noted.

Webb sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension, and get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment.

He will begin the jail term at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.

John B. Pool, 55, of Nesquehoning, was arrested for DUI on April 28 along Blakeslee Blvd., in Lehighton, a first offense. Given a test, the result was .14BAC.

Webb placed him on probation for six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300, and get a D&A evaluation.

On a summary charge or driving while under suspension, he was fined $200 and costs.

John M. Ruzicka, 26, of Lehighton, was arrested for DUI on Jan. 15 along South St., in Lehighton, a first offense. Given a test, the result was .18BAC.

Webb placed him on probation for six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300, and get a D&A evaluation.

Peter Skaflestad, 23, of Albrightsville, was arrested for DUI on June 17 along South St., in Jim Thorpe. Give a test, the result was .23BAC.

Webb sentenced him to serve 30 days to six months in prison, a fine of $750, one year license suspension, and get a D&A evaluation.

He was given credit for 28 days spent in a inpatient rehabilitation program and will begin serving the remaining two days at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

Kermit Strohl, 50, of Weissport, was arrested on April 10 along Railway St., in Weissport. Given a test, the result was .21BAC.

Webb noted Strohl has five prior DUI convictions.

Sentencing was deferred.

Timothy J. Youngbroder, 40, of Weissport, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Jan. 29 at his home along White St. Found was a pipe for smoking marijuana.

Webb imposed a fine of $100.

ARD placements

The following were placed in the county's ARD program as first time offenders. If they successfully complete all conditions of the program their record will be wiped clean. However, if the fail to complete the program or are revoked from it, then the Commonwealth reserves the right to prosecute them on all pending charges. A person does not admit guilt in entering the program.

Placed were:

Holly Marie Christopher, 23, of Lehighton, was placed for six months on a DUI charge. She was arrested on Feb. 18 along Third St., in Lehighton. Given a test, the result was .14BAC.

She was assessed $400 for the cost of the program, and ordered to get a D&A evaluation, and license suspended for 30 days.

Tiffani Brooke Kuhns, 21, of Allentown, was placed for a year on a DUI charge. She was arrested on Feb. 18 along First St., in Lehighton. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.

She was assessed $450, ordered to get a D&A evaluation, and license suspended for 60 days.

James L. Petch, 41, of Lehighton, was placed for six months on a DUI charge. He was arrested on April 6 along Third St., in Lehighton. Given a test, the result was .09BAC.

He was assessed $350 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation.

Cody Jay Shellhammer, 21, of Slatington, was placed for a year on a DUI charge. He was arrested on Sept. 24, 2011, along Mauch Chunk St., in Mahoning Township. Give a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.

He was assessed $450, and ordered to get a D&A evaluation, and license suspended for 90 days.

All defendants sentenced and placed in the ARD must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole and in the ARD program.
