DANIELSVILLE – The banner year for Marian's golf team continued Monday at the District 11 Championship Qualifying Tournament.
Three Marian players made it through the event and will join teammate Michael Gottstein in next week's District 11 Class AA Championship Tournament.
The Colts' Nicolas Kweder, Josh Green and Chris Postupak all qualified, along with Tamaqua's Michael Weinert and Northwestern's Nick Vecellio. Gottstein, the Schuylkill League champ, was exempt from qualifying.
Kweder posted the third-lowest score in Class AA, shooting an 82 Monday on a windy day at Woodstone Golf Club in Danielsville.
"I feel like I played pretty well," Kweder said. "The morning wasn't too bad, but in the afternoon the wind picked up and it made it even more of a challenging course."
The Colt senior rode a hot putter to his first berth in the district championship tournament after his first trip to the qualifier. He estimated he took 30-32 putts Monday.
"I think today more than any day this year I putted pretty well," Kweder said. "I made two birdies on the back and one on the front. That might be more than I made all year."
Kweder is a four-year member of the golf team at Marian, which won this year's Schuylkill League title and will compete in Wednesday's District 11 Class AA team tournament. He improved 10 strokes from his junior year, averaging 79 this year to earn his way into the qualifier.
He moved on to his first district championship with confidence gained from Monday's performance.
"I think when I play my best I'm one of the best kids out here," said Kweder. "I know the kids that make it (to districts) are going to come out and put up a great fight. It's going to be a lot of fun."
Eamon Marone of Notre Dame (Green Pond) shot the Monday's low round, carding a 73. Northampton's Evan Notaro, the 2010 district champ, shot 75 for the low round in Class AAA, which played the same course alongside the AA players.
This year was the first year that district, regional and state fields were broken up into two classes. Next week at the Shawnee Resort golf course, players will compete for district medals as well as spots in the PIAA East Regional Championship. Six boys in each class as well as three girls in each class advance to regionals.
Green makes his second straight trip to districts in hopes of his first regional berth in a four-year career in which he played every one of Marian's matches since joining the team as a freshman.
Monday Green carded a 15-over par 87. He got off to a slow start but recovered.
"I shot 10 over on the front nine," he said. "So I knew I had to shoot something better on the back. I shot 5 over, which isn't spectacular, but its better."
Vecellio, who shot 83 Monday, makes his third straight trip to districts. He joins Tiger teammate Cole Miller, the two-time Colonial League champ and defending district champ who was exempt from qualifying, in next week's championship tournament.
Weinert, who shot 90 at last year's district qualifier and missed moving on by four strokes, came in well under the number this year. He shot 85. The cut was 92 for Class AA, 85 for Class AAA.
Postupak made it right on the number. A life-long golfer and another four-year member of Marian's team, he's not sure what to expect at districts.
"I don't rightly know," Postupak said. "I'm just going to practice as much as I can and I'm going to try to make something happen to hopefully keep up with my all-star teammates, because that's what they are."
Players who advance through next Monday's 27-hole district tournament will move on to the East Regional Championship at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood on Tuesday, October 16.
