Want to get a head start on your Christmas shopping, without spending a lot of money?
Stop by the Trinity Christmas sale to find the perfect gifts at bargain prices. The Trinity Thrift Store in Lehighton will continue its annual Christmas Sale this Saturday, Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church's Luther Hall.
All proceeds will benefit the Trinity Food Pantry, which offers emergency food supplies to needy families in the Lehighton Area School District.
This year's sale will feature decorations, ornaments and lights, jewelry, angels, stuffed animals, and artificial trees and wreaths. A section of vintage ornaments and decorations will also be available.
"There are many people who collect vintage holiday items, whether they are looking for ornaments, old books, or older decorations," said Kay Patterson, the manager of the Thrift Store. "For many people, it's reminiscent of what they had at their parents' house as children. It takes them back to their own childhood."
The sale will also include women's holiday dresses and evening wear, and a limited selection of children's holiday attire.
Nearly a dozen volunteers spent the day before Thanksgiving preparing for the sale, sorting through items and displaying them throughout Luther Hall. The Thrift Store relies heavily on volunteers for both its Christmas sale and thrice weekly store openings, and there are no paid workers. All items offered for sale have been donated by members of the community.
"People from all over have donated new and gently used items. A lot of items this year are new," said Patterson. "We receive so many Christmas donations that our store isn't able to display them all. This sale gives us a chance to display our Christmas items for the community."
Looking to finish your shopping list with a few items that can be used beyond the holidays? The Thrift Store's main sales area, located between the church and the Trinity Food Pantry, will also be open during normal business hours on Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday from 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The store is home to a wide variety of winter and all-season clothing for men, women, and children, including coats, sweaters, shoes and jeans; household and kitchen items; knickknacks, and more.
"If people don't want to go to the malls and fight the crowds, our Christmas sale is a good place to start your holiday shopping," said Patterson, adding that the sale's low prices are ideal for families and children who might be looking for inexpensive gifts for family members. "We have very good deals, ranging from gifts that cost 25 cents to new kitchen appliances for $30."
Sales from the Thrift Store's operations benefit the Trinity Food Pantry, which currently serves more than 450 needy families each month. Each eligible family receives one bag of food per month containing cereal, protein sources like canned tuna and peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, and more enough to feed each family member for three days.
"The number of families that we support is up considerably from past years. When we started this Christmas sale in 2006, there were 200 families receiving food. Now there are 450," she said. "It takes a lot of money to provide food for 450 families each month. We're fortunate because the Thrift Store supports the pantry, and because the community has been so supportive of the Thrift Store."
