Carbon man arrested 7 years after fatal crash

Seven years after a fatal accident in which he was the driver and his passenger died, a Carbon County man was arraigned on charges incident to the accident, including homicide by vehicle.

Selvin Johenes Lopez, 25, of 225 N. Seventh St., Lehighton, was arraigned Tuesday in Lehigh County on charges of homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death or injury, driving without a license, failure to stay in traffic, and three counts of recklessly endangering another person. He failed to post $30,000 bail and was committed to the county prison.The crash occurred on April 5, 2005, along SR873 in Washington Township. Lopez was driving a vehicle southbound and attempting to pass another vehicle when his car made contact with the other vehicle.Lopez lost control with his vehicle skidding off the road, then re-entering the road where the passenger side was struck by a northbound car.A passenger in the back seat, Byron Roland De Paz Cordon, 22, who had the same Lehighton address as Lopez, died in the crash. Two other passengers in the car were identified as Wilber Eladio Strada and Amilcar Hernandez, also listing the same Lehighton address, sustained minor injuries.Although state police at Bethlehem filed the charges against Lopez seven months after the crash he was never formally arraigned and charged until this week. No reason was given for the delay in the formal arraignment and when the charges were filed was noted in court records.
