Elderly ripped off
The business manager at a Monroe County senior living facility has been charged with taking money from two of the residents at the home.
State police at Fern Ridge said Elizabeth Ashly Ruffa, 24, of Brodheadsville, who troopers identified as the business manager at Wesley Enhanced Living, located along SR115 and Weir Lake Road in Brodheadsville, Chestnuthill Township, has been charged with forgery and theft by deception.Troopers said on May 2 they responded to the senior living center and were advised of suspicious activity in the bank account of Patricia Murphy, 89, a resident at the facility. Murphy told troopers that Ruffa asked her for checks for her rent at the facility on numerous occasions. Ruffa told Murphy to sign the checks and leave the remainder of the checks blank, stating she would complete the checks for Murphy.Murphy gave Ruffa the checks to pay for her rent and/or bills. The investigation revealed that 12 of Murphy's checks were written out to Ruffa and cashed between Dec. 9, 2011, and April 9. Bank records show that Ruffa cashed all 12 checks totaling $13,734.10.During the course of the investigation troopers learned that Gloria Choy, 86, another resident at the living center, also had suspicious activity in her bank account around the same time of Murphy's.Hoy told troopers Ruffa asked her for checks for her rent at the facility. Ruffa also told Hoy to sign the checks and leave the remainder of the checks blank, stating she would complete the remainder of the checks for Choy. The investigation revealed that Ruffa cashed seven of Choy's checks totaling $4,239.47.On May 16 Ruffa was interviewed at the Fern Ridge barracks. She told troopers she accepted the checks from both Murphy and Choy and cashed them at two different banks.Ruffa further told troopers she used Murphy's funds to pay a previous balance for her at Golden Living, for her rent at Westley Enhanced Living, and to pay Murphy's resident trust fund. The investigation revealed no payments have been made toward Murphy's Golden Living balance, Murphy's rent at Wesley and to her resident trust fund.Ruffa told troopers she used Choy's funds to pay her trust fund at Wesley and her insurance. The investigation revealed no payments have been made toward Choy's resident trust fund and that she does not pay insurance companies or have any outstanding balance with any insurance companies.Ruffa was arraigned before a district judge and released on $50,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for June 8 at 10 a.m. before District Justice Debby A. York, of Brodheadsville.
