Lehighton United Veterans Organization will be conducting Memorial Day services in the rural areas of Weissport and Lehighton on Sunday, May 27.

The West group will be leaving Legion headquarters at 8:40 a.m. Richard "Reds" O'Donnell, past legion chaplain, is the West group director. UVO chaplain James H. Wentz will offer prayers at all of the services for the West group.

Services will be held at 9 a.m. at St. John's cemetery. Speaker will be Keith "Jake" Boyer, retired educator and USAF veteran. St. John Sunday School will be doing the singing. In the event of rain, services will be held in the church.

En route to Ben Salem Church, a rifle squad will fire a salute, and a bugler will sound taps at Zimmerman's Free Church, Cemetery, Mahoning Memorial and Peter Nothstein's grave at Normal Square.

At 10:15 a.m., services will be held at Ben Salem Cemetery, East Penn. Singing will be by the Ben Salem Sunday School. Speaker is Fred Bresswein, CPA. In the event of rain, the service will be held in the church.

AT 11:15 a.m., services will be held at Dinkey Memorial cemetery, Ashfield. Singing will be by the Sunday School. The speaker will be Dr. Sam Dolgopol, PhD, USN veteran. A wreath will be placed by Madison DeLuca and she will recite "In Flanders Field." The 20th District VFW Patriot's Pen winner, Amy McConnell, will read her essay. In the event of rain, services will be held in the church.

At 12:15 p.m., services will be held at the Packerton cemetery, with Jordan Sample, a student at Lehighton Area High School, as the speaker. There will be a rifle salute. In the event of rain, services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Packerton.

The West group will be leaving Legion headquarters at 8:40 a.m. The East director is K.M. "Spike" Long, American Legion past commander. Chaplain William H. Gross will offer the prayers for the West group services.

At 9 a.m., services will be held in the Parryville cemetery.

There also will be a rifle salute by the UVO Color Guard and rifle squad and a bugler at the Jewish cemetery and at Bunker Hill.

At 9:45 a.m., services will be held at the Long Run cemetery. Singing will be by the Long Run Sunday School. Speaker will be Matt McGeehan, a student at Lehighton Area High School. In the event of rain, services will be held at the church.

AT 10:15 a.m., services will be held at the Big Creek cemetery. Singing will be by the Big Creek Sunday School. Speaker will be Megan Mausteller, a student at Lehighton Area High School. In the event of rain, services will be held in the church.

At 11 a.m., services will be held at Franklin Heights cemetery. Speaker is Sarah Kistler, a student at Lehighton Area High School. In the event of rain, services will be held at St. Matthew Church.

Lehighton UVO will also be participating in four programs in the Lehighton Area School District: Wednesday, May 23, Mahoning Elementary at 10 a.m.; and Lehighton Area Middle School at 1 p.m.; on Thursday, May 24, 9 a.m. at Franklin Elementary; and at East Penn Elementary School at 1 p.m.

The Lehighton U.V.O. conducts 11 Memorial Day services between Sunday and Monday and conducts rifle volley salutes and "Taps" for 14 monuments, concluding with a flag-raising ceremony at the American Legion Post 314, Lehighton on Monday.

Any men or women who are veterans and members of the American Legion, AMVETS, VFW or any other credible veterans organization and would like to join the Lehighton UVO is asked to contact K.M.
