Two elderly Schuylkill residents were killed Wednesday and the other person seriously injured in one of two crashes that occurred within 45 minutes of each other and only eight miles apart.

State police at Frackville identified the two killed in the first crash as John Egan, 84, and his passenger, Joyce Dowling, 81, both of New Philadelphia.

The crash occurred about 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Market Street and Chestnut Street (SR443), in McKeansburg, East Brunswick Township.

Troopers said Egan was northbound on Market and approaching the intersection when he failed to yield the right-of-way to traffic on Chestnut. As a result Egan's vehicle was struck broadside by a vehicle driven by John William Schrader, 61, of New Ringgold.

Dowling was pronounced dead at the scene. Egan was flown by Medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

Schrader was flown to the Reading Hospital where he is listed in serious condition. Egan and Schrader were not wearing seat belts but Dowling was, troopers noted.

Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the New Ringgold Fire Company and ambulance personnel, Pottsville/Schuylkill Haven EMS unit and fire and ambulance personnel from Orwigsburg.

The crash remains under investigation.

Second crash

The second crash that resulted in serious injuries occurred about 5:30 p.m. along Hemlock Drive, in North Manheim Township.

Troopers from the Schuylkill Haven barracks said a 16-year-old Pottsville male was driving a 1999 Ford F250 truck westbound when he left his lane of travel while rounding a right curve. The truck entered the eastbound lane and struck a 2007 Toyota 4 Runner pushing it into an embankment. The driver of the Toyota was identified as Robert Ulaner, 61, of Orwigsburg.

Ulaner was flown by Medevac helicopter to the LVH where he was admitted in serious condition. The teen was taken to a Pottsville hospital for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said. Both operators were wearing seat belts, troopers noted.

Assisting at the scene were volunteers from the Pottsville, Schuylkill Haven and Orwigsburg fire companies and ambulances from Pottsville, Schuylkill Haven and Auburn.

The crash is still under investigation.
