Young driver injured after striking pole

Emergency personnel were called to Fairview Street (about a mile east of the Marian Avenue intersection) in Rush Township around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a car crashed into a pole. When they arrived, they noticed two females at the vehicle, a black Nissan Maxima. The female driver was Emilee Barkus, 19, of Mahanoy City, was taken via Ryan Township Rescue Squad/Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital for unknown injuries, while the female passenger, Maria Yankus, 19, also of Mahanoy City, was treated on scene. Police report that Barkus over compensated when she approached a turning flatbed truck. Also responding were Rush Township Police, Fire Police, Hometown Fire Company and Quakake Fire Company. The condition of the driver was unknown as of press time. PPL also responded immediately to perform needed repairs to the pole and lines.
