One week life span

The bright lights of the Panther Valley stadium attraced all kinds of flying insects during the recent Relay For Life held at the stadium. Actias luna, commonly known as the Luna Moth, is a lime-green moth with a wingspan of up to 4.5 inches, making it one of the largest moths in North America. At first, their wings are very small when they first emerge from their cacoon. The moth will enlarge its wings by pumping bodily fluids through them. During this time, their wings will be soft for about two hours and they must climb somewhere safe to wait for their wings to harden before they can fly away. The moth also has tapering hindwings, which have eyespots on them in order to confuse potential predators. Although rarely seen due to their very brief (1 week) adult lives, Luna Moths are considered common and are more commonly seen at night. As with all Saturniidae type moths, the adults do not eat or have mouths. They emerge as adults solely to mate, and as such, only live approximately one week.
