Franklin Township Fire Company will be accepting delivery of a brand new tanker this year from KME in Nesquehoning.
The tanker, which became a reality through the efforts of the community and fire company members, will be delivered before the upcoming block party on Sunday, July 22. A parade starting at 2 p.m. will precede the dedication of the tanker at 3:30 p.m.
The tanker, which cost approximately $270,000, replaces the company's old Mack tanker that is 28 years old and did not pass inspection.
The old tanker cost $83,000 when it was new.
Other special activities are planned for the block party. On Friday night, July 20, the band, "Nite Flyte" will perform; on Saturday, July 21, Nightwind and fireworks will be held; and on Sunday, July 22, "Final Justice," will take the stage.
There will be games, rides, book fair, bingo, Chinese auction and special prizes. Lawn chairs are welcome.
To raise funds for the tanker, Franklin Township Lions Club is holding a Spring Fling on Sunday, June 17, at the Phifer Ice Dam Park. There will be music by Hickory Rose Band from 6 to 8 p.m. The kitchen will be open from 5 to 8 p.m.
Also there will be a giant yard sale at the fire company on Friday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations of gently used items may be dropped off at the fire company from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6, 7, 13 and 14. Last year's yard sale raised close to $6,000.
