NV loses opener

Northern Valley received outstanding pitching from Sawyer Smith and Tyler Harris, but South Parkland's Matt Hurd was even better.

Hurd tossed a three-hit shutout to hand Northern Valley a 1-0 defeat in its Lehigh Valley Legion opener on Tuesday.Smith hurled four innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out four. Harris relieved the NV starter and pitched three scoreless frames, giving up two hits while fanning a pair.South Parkland (2-2) scored the game's only run in the top of the third when Jake Rosenblatt drove in Damin Muth.Kirk Bender had two hits for Northern Valley (0-1) while Kyle Schomp also singled. Collin Breidinger reached base twice on a pair of walks.Northern Valley is scheduled to return to action tonight when it hosts Fullerton at Northern Lehigh's field.
