Jim Thorpe police host annual youth fishing contest

The 2nd Annual Jim Thorpe Police Fishing Contest was held at the Germantown Grove on the East side of town.

The event was open to all children in the Jim Thorpe Area School District aged 15 and under.The idea for the police-sponsored youth event originally came from retired Carbon County Sheriff Pete Hoherchak.Jim Thorpe's Mayor Michael Sofranko said "I'd like to thank the Rodgers family and the Germantown Grove crew for once again allowing the Jim Thorpe Police to be there and use the facility and buildings for the event."He said that the Germantown Grove crew had done an outstanding job helping out with the fishing contest.The Mayor also acknowledged the efforts of Police Chief Joe Schatz and Hoherchak for putting the whole thing together.Chief Schatz said "today was a great day and we're glad to see the youth are out participating in the fishing contest."He noted that "this is another aspect of our community policing where we try and get the police to interact with the youth here.""This is a great way to show it and a great way to do it is having this fishing contest."Chief Schatz also said that "we put in about 500 fish today and there was a lot of community support."The Chief was grateful to the sponsors that contributed to the Jim Thorpe Police Fishing Contest, among them : Retired Sheriff Pete Hoherchak, the Rodgers Family, the Germantown Grove Association, Sand Spring Trout Hatchery, Highland Beverage, Jim Thorpe Market, Cabella's, Jim Thorpe National Bank, Mauch Chunk Trust Co., Jim Thorpe Rotary Club, Jim Thorpe Lions Club, Fairview Hose Co. Social Club, the Inn at Jim Thorpe, Jim Thorpe Auto Rentals, Jim Thorpe Community Watch, Ron Sheehan, Pat Hensan, Henry Desroisier, Ed Gula and Family, Ken Schlect, Craig Zurn, Matt King, Tim Popek, and all the volunteers that helped make this 2nd Annual Fishing Contest a great success.

Six-year-old Francisco Morales, 9-year-old Anthony Roth, and 9-year-old Ronald Lighting II, all from Jim Thorpe, are all smiles at the 2nd Annual Jim Thorpe Police Fishing Contest which was held at the Germantown Grove.
