A motion to hire an additional road crew worker was revived last evening after being killed at last month's West Penn Township Board of Supervisors meeting. The motion had died due to a deadlock between Supervisors Alfonso Martinez and James Dean and no third one to cast a vote.

The road crew only had one fulltime worker before another was hired last evening with a 2-1 majority. Supervisor James G. Dean did not accept the motion last month, and he voted against it this month because of budget issues.Present after missing several meetings because he said he was traveling on business and at other times there were scheduling issues, Vice Chairman James Akins cast the deciding vote in favor of hiring another road crew worker.Nearly $300,000 in bids for road repairs and general maintenance were accepted last month during a time when the road crew is busy repairing damage done by hurricanes and severe storms, and the majority of the board feels the extra worker is important to getting these projects done.Township resident Bill Leiby, who had suggested last month that an alternative supervisor be appointed to cover Akins' absence, said he was happy to see a full board at this meeting. With balance restored to the board, motions are again receiving the evaluation needed to properly make executive decisions.Next board of supervisors meeting is on Monday, July 2, at 7 p.m., in the municipal building.
