New Philadelphia remembers sacrifices

New Philadelphia held its annual Memorial Day Ceremony following its parade on Monday.

The service consisted of introduction by Master of Ceremonies Paul Egan from American Legion Post 677. An invocation was followed by Father Edward Essig of the Holy Cross Church. Also part of the ceremony was the Cressona Band; Lori Mazloom, who sang the National Anthem; guest speaker Schuylkill County Commission George Halcovage Jr.; Catholic War Veterans (CWV) Gold Star Post 1079 Commander Paul Crochunis, who read deceased veterans names. Crochunis also presented a tribute citation award for Al Sockalosky in recognition of over 50 years of dedicated service as a charter member and past commander of the CWV Post.Also taking party in the service were students Tabitha Borchick, Kaitlin McDonald and Tara Paltanavage, New Philadelphia American Legion Commander George Matalavage, New Philadelphia AMVETS Commander Joe Williams Jr.; New Philadelphia Boy Scouts Troop 633, musician Thomas Hill and Pastor Ashley Brown. Second guest speaker was First Sergeant Brian Fogarty, U.S. Marine Corps.
