Carbon driving facing DUI counts

A Carbon County driver is facing two counts of driving under the influence (DUI) following a crash in which police said he tried to flee the scene, and then after being released from custody, driving a motorcycyle while under the influence, and being involved in another crash.

State police at Lehighton said Rex Benner, 52, of Palmerton, was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma truck northbound on Forest Inn Road, in Lower Towamensing Township, near Mill Road, about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, when he left his lane of travel and his vehicle struck a 1993 Saturn operated southbound by Pedro Capinha, 27, of Palmerton.After impact Benner attempted to flee but was apprehended a short time later. Capinha sustained minor injuries while his passenger, Tara Lee Hunter, 34, also of Palmerton, was not injured. Damages were turned major to both vehicles.Troopers said Benner showed signs of intoxication and was transported to the Pamerton hospital for a blood test. The DUI charge is pending the test results, troopers added.Assisting at the scene were Palmerton police and volunteers from the Aquashicola Fire Company and Pamlerton ambulance personnel.Troopers said after being processed and taking his keys from his truck, Benner was released from custody and told not to drive. About 12:35 a.m. on Monday, July 23, Benner got on his 2006 Harley Davidson bike and was involved in a crash at the intersection of Fireline and Cherry Hill roads, in Lower Towamensing Township.He was again placed under arrest for DUI.
