Over two dozen riders took to the hills and valleys of Schuylkill County during a 75-mile bike ride to benefit Chris Deem, 34. Deem, a longtime diabetic, was diagnosed with cancer in March and suffered an infection after being admitted to Lehigh Valley Hospital. The infection traveled through his entire body, compromising his kidney function. Even though Deem had surgery to remove the cancer, doctors found the disease had spread, resulting in a softball-sized tumor at the top of his kidney. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, and has needed blood transfusions to stabilize his blood count. Family and friends helped organize the ride.
