Franklin Twp. wins opener

MILROY The wait was worth it for Franklin Township.

Franklin's opening game in the Pennsylvania State 13-14 year-old Babe Ruth Tournament took more than 24 hours to complete. But it wasn't complaining.That's because Franklin Township withstood a rain-forced suspension on Thursday and a delayed start on Friday to eventually defeat Blue Valey, 6-4.Franklin will have two more games this weekend in the eight-team tournament, which is divided into a pair of four-team pools. After round-robin play is done, the top three teams in each pool advancing to Monday's single-elimination phase of the tournament.Franklin Township will play West End of Williamsport today at 5:30. Its final pool play game will be against Mifflin County.Franklin was leading Blue Valley, 3-2, in third inning of its opener on Thursday when rain forced the suspension of play. After a long rain delay on Friday, the teams were finally able to get back on the field.Franklin Township was still ahead 4-3 heading into the sixth inning when it pushed across of important insurance runs.Ben Cordova worked a walk to open the inning. Austin Lilly followed with an infield single. Jordan McElmoyle and KJ Snerr then delivered RBI singles to stretch the Franklin lead to 6-3."The bottom half of our batting order really made key contributions," said Franklin Township manager Brad Niehoff. "In the middle innings, our number nine hitter, Eli DeKorte, frustrated the pitcher with an eight-pitch at-bat, and came up with a big base hit."Then in the sixth, Ben Cordova and Austin Lilly started our two-run inning."Franklin Township pitcher Wyatt Clements made those sixth inning insurance runs stand up and he finished off his two-day, complete-game effort."Wyatt Clements started the game a night ago and had to face adverse conditions," said Niehoff. "He pitched two innings Thursday and had to come back Friday and pitch five innings. It was a tremendous effort on his part."McElmoyle had three hits for Franklin Township and Snerr added two hits.
