State police at Frackville reported investigating a three vehicle crash in a work zone along Interstate 81 in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County. The crash occurred about 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 15.
Troopers said Gregory A. Steinke, 64, of Clintonville, Wis., driving a 2012 Ford Expedition, was stopped in the left lane while southbound in a construction zone where there is only one lane of travel. He was stopped for traffic ahead of him.
Troopers said Keith E. Murphy, 64, of Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, driving a 2004 Cadillac Escalade, was behind Steinke and was unable to stop in time. The front of the Escalade hit the rear of the Expedition. Jeffrey A. Graham, 21, of Baldwin, Md., driving a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500, was behind Murphy and was also unable to stop and sideswiped the Escalade with the driver side.
Three passengers with Murphy, Nathan Bashore, 13, Garalee Bashore, 47, and Laura Murphy , 70, all of Elizabethtown , were injured and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville. The three drivers and a total of eight passengers among the three vehicles, were all not injured.
Troopers cited Murphy and Graham each for driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.
Troopers investigated another crash along I81 in Foster Township, Schuylkill County. Troopers said Jolene Royster, 53, of Wrightsville, York County, was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer northbound in the right lane about 12:55 a.m. Saturday when he swerved to the right berm to avoid striking a mattress that was on the road. Royster lost control of the vehicle that left the road and went up a slight embankment.
The vehicle then rolled over onto its left side, continued northeast, and came to final rest on the road at the Exit 116, off ramp.
Royster sustained a minor injury and damages were moderate to the vehicle, which had to be towed from the scene.
Troopers also investigated a crash about 11:47 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, along Shenandoah Road, just north of Murray Meadow Lane, in Union Township, Schuylkill County. Troopers said James R. Zarcufsky, 19, of Shenandoah, was driving a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro 228 southbound and going downhill when he failed to negotiate a hard left curve. The car traveled southwest through the on-coming lane and partially left the road.
The car then re-entered the road and traveled across the roadway as it spun clockwise. The front of the Camaro struck a utility pole and came to rest facing northeast.
Zarcufsky sustained a minor injury and was taken to the SCM-S. Jackson St. He will be cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic, troopers said.
