The Rotary Club of Jim Thorpe recently received four award certificates at the Rotary International District 7410 Awards Banquet.

The club received four awards out of a possible five which were for club accomplishments in Literacy, Leadership, New Generations, and Community Service.

Rotary Club president Susan Sterling noted that "these awards represent a club effort because everyone contributes to raising the money that we use to fund these projects and everybody in the community benefits in the process."

The criteria for the awards were established by Zone 32 consisting of 1053 clubs in an eight state Northeastern U. S. area.

The Literacy Award is for participation in programs and projects that promote literacy and educational opportunities for all in the community.

The club supports the Dimmick Memorial Library, annually gives dictionaries to every third grader in the Jim Thorpe Area School District, supports an essay contest, and provides scholarships at three local high schools.

The Leadership Award is for participation in programs and projects that promote leadership development and educational opportunities for all in the community.

The club sends four high school students to the annual Rotary Youth Leadership camp, hosts two different students each month at weekly club meetings, and supports Rotary International in their effort to eradicate polio worldwide.

The New Generations Award is given to clubs which worked to develop leadership and vocational service opportunities for the community youth and young adults.

The club sponsors and hosts both incoming and outgoing exchange students, has a Christmas Gift Project utilizing marketing and National Honor Society high school students and provide scholarships.

The Community Service Award recognizes activities for both young and old.

The Jim Thorpe club provides clothing to disadvantaged children each year at Christmas and also supports the annual Summer Recreation Program in Jim Thorpe's Memorial Park.
