Few remaining Centralia residents must move

Following a recent federal appeals court decision, the few remaining residents living in the borough of Centralia must move.

Sitting near the western edge of Schuylkill County, Centralia's population has dwindled from more than 2,761 residents in 1890 to only five homes currently. In 1962, a dumpsite fire below the borough resulted in an underground mine fire that has continued to burn to this day. As a result, all properties in the borough were claimed under eminent domain by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1992, most of which were then destroyed. However, a few residents continue to live in the borough in spite of the failure of a lawsuit to reverse the eminent domain claim.Centralia is one of the least-populated municipalities in Pennsylvania.

Toxic gas and smoke rise from the underground mine fire, which has been burning below Centralia since May 1962.
