A Philadelphia resident and her son, an inmate at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mahanoy, Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, were arrested at the prison recently on drug and other charges.
State police at Frackville said Tameeka R. Hawkins, 40, was arrested on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-marijuana, possession, and contraband into a prison.
Her son, David La-Qill Sparks, 23, was charged with criminal solicitation and two counts of criminal conspiracy.
According to troopers through intelligence conducted by staff members at the prison information was obtained that Hawkins and Sparks conspired by telephone conversations to have marijuana brought into the prison.
Hawkins brought five small ballons filled with marijuana to the prison and transferred them to Sparks while visiting him.
Video surveillance captured the event, troopers said.
Hawkins was taken into custody at the prison and arraigned before District Judge Anthony Kilker, of Shenandoah, on the charges and then committed to the county prison in Pottsville after failing to post bail.
Sparks was arraigned at the prison by Kilker.
Troopers said the arrest occurred about 1 p.m. on June 24.
