Charges are likely to be filed against a Lehighton man who was driving a UPS van that struck Jim Thorpe Fire Chief Bill Diehm Saturday morning, pending the completion of an investigation by borough police.
Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joseph Schatz said early Tuesday that Diehm was struck by the van, driven east on Lentz Trail by Steven M. Schock, 36, of Lehighton, at 10:25 a.m.
At the time, Diehm was standing by his vehicle alongside the road in the area of the borough water department.
"The investigation is continuing, and charges are pending completion of that investigation," Schatz said in a telephone interview.
Diehm, known for his volunteer work, was helping direct traffic for the Race Street Run when he was hit.
He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where staff Tuesday said he was in stable condition.
Diehm was reported to have multiple broken bones.
Diehm answered the telephone in his room Tuesday morning, saying he "has felt better," and referred any questions to Schatz.
