State police at Fern Ridge reported on two crashes probed on Monroe County roads.
A one vehicle crash was reported about 11:31 a.m. on July 5 along SR209, south of Camelia Road, in Chestnuthill Township. Troopers said Dennis G. Kowalski Jr., 20, of Kunkletown, was driving a Volkswagen Golf northbound when, for unknown reasons, he left the travel lane and made a quick hard left steering maneuver onto the berm.
The car then rotated about 80 degrees clockwise striking a ditch. After impact with the ditch the car's front end then struck a tree where it came to rest.
Kowalski was able to free himself from the vehicle and was transported by West End ambulance to the Pocono Medical Center (PMC), East Stroudsburg, for treatment.
A passenger, Moriah Wright, 18, of Brodheadsville, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by West End Fire Company volunteers. She was flown by Pennstar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill, for treatment of what troopers said were major injuries.
Damages were severe to the vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.
A crash occurred about 4:18 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, along SR715 in Jackson Township. Troopers said Andy A. Philbert, 23, of Stroudsburg, was driving a 1998 BMW southbound and approaching Mountain Road, when he fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle drifted off the road and struck a utility pole with the passenger side.
Philbert was injured and taken to the PMC for treatment. He was cited for careless driving, troopers added.
