One female motorist escaped injury while another was seriously injured in a crash Wednesday afternoon along SR443 in Mahoning Township. The crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. when a West Penn Township woman was traveling west and stopped on the roadway in an attempt to make a left turn onto a private lot. As she sat on the road her sport utility vehicle was struck in the rear by another female driver. The force of the impact drove the first unit across the oncoming lanes and onto the lot while the striking vehicle came to rest in the west bound lane. The driver of the striking vehicle was found lying in the roadway with a serious leg injury. The victim was treated at the scene by members of the Mahoning Valley ambulance and Lehighton paramedics then flown via the Penn Star helicopter to the St. Luke's Hospital Trauma Center in Bethlehem. The Mahoning Valley and Lehighton fire departments responded to the scene. Carbon county area fire police maintained traffic control closing down the roadway and detouring traffic around the scene. Mahoning Township police are investigating the incident.
