A state Department of Environmental Resources (DER) official said new regulations pertaining to landfills will mandate the Coaldale landfill will be closed within two years. Dale Williams, DER's acting regional operations manager, Wilkes-Barre, said all unlined landfills such as Coaldale's will be phased out by the state "within a short period of time." The fact that the borough landfill does not have monitoring wells required by current state regulations "is one more reason why they (Coaldale) would be closed down," Williams said.
