With the new school year beginning Monday, August 27, a new traffic pattern has been designed for Shull-David Elementary School in Lehighton for both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.

"Our main objective is to make sure all students arrive to and exit from our schools safely," said Elementary Principal Aaron Sebelin. "In working with the Lehighton Police Department, Borough officials, and district administration, we feel the changes implemented will ensure student safety."

At all times by all traffic, left turns are now prohibited when travelling north on Beaver Run Road into the Shull-David horseshoe lot.

For morning drop-off, it is suggested that parents enter the lower parking lot of Lehighton Area Middle School, park in the designated yellow lined spaces, and escort their children to the crossing guard or the school. For safety reasons, pedestrians are urged to cross the street at the designated crosswalk with the help of the crossing guard.

Only school buses may enter the Shull-David driveway from 8 to 8:20 a.m. All other parent traffic must go to the middle school lower parking lot. From 8:20 to 8:30 a.m., parents may drive into the Shull-David lot to drop off their children.

Teachers will be positioned in front of the building to assist children in and out of vehicles and buses. Parents are asked to not exit the car when dropping children off inside the horseshoe lot, as this would cause traffic to come to a standstill.

Also, parents are asked to stay in an orderly line during drop-off and pick-up. There is no passing allowed within the driveway.

Students are asked to exit all vehicles on the passenger side so they are not walking between traffic. It is also suggested that students wait inside of the vehicle until they are at or near a teacher at the front doors of the school in order to exit the car.

Students may enter the building beginning at 8:15 a.m. Those students who arrive after 8:30 a.m. must be accompanied by a parent in order to be signed in at the office.

For afternoon pick-up, it is again suggested that parents park in the lower parking lot of LAMS and walk to the school at the crossing guard to pick up their children.

Only school buses will be permitted into the driveway from 2:45 to 3:05 p.m. Once all of the students have boarded the buses and they have pulled out of the lot, parents may enter the horseshoe lot to pick up their children.

Lines have been painted on the road for parents to drive slowly into the Shull-David lot by making a right turn while travelling south on Beaver Run Road. Parents are asked to not park on the street, as signs are posted for no parking. Student dismissal begins at 3:05 p.m.

When parents are picking up their children in the horseshoe lot, students should enter all vehicles on the passenger side so they are not walking between traffic. It is suggested that the students wait behind the yellow lines in order to enter the vehicle until it pulls up to the curbing area and comes to a complete stop.

When students enter the vehicle to leave school, parents are reminded to ensure that the children are buckled up in the proper seat in order to follow state seat belt laws.

Lehighton Police Department will issue tickets to those who do not follow traffic rules.

"I implore all parents who are planning on dropping off or picking up their children from school to give themselves ample time so they can adhere to our procedures," said Sebelin.
