A Schuylkill County driver was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash that occurred about 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, along Interstate 81 in New Castle Township.
State police at Frackville said Steven Wikle, 42, of Frackville, was operating a 1999 Ford Escort northbound when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the road and crossed the right northbound shoulder and onto a grassy roadside culvert. After hitting a rocky embankment with its front right corner, the car rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels along the shoulder of the road.
Wikle, who was not wearing a seat belt, was severely injured and flown from the scene by Lifeflight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was admitted in critical condition.
Damages were severe to the vehicle.
