Census records show farming was dominant occupation

Copies of census figures provided by Norman Burger at the Aug. 16 meeting of the Chestnuthill anniversary committee showed that farming was the dominant occupation. The dominant manufacturing facilities were the brick factories in Saylorsburg and Kunkletown. It was the last year the census was done under Northampton County.

Taxes were .003 cents per $1 of assessment.There were a few steam tractors in the early 1900s but they were more common on the larger farms of the Midwest. Electric cars preceded the internal combustion engine, but were too expensive to be owned by many.General Harry Trexler, known as a preservationist, did much to create the Allentown Park System. In Chestnuthill Township he donated the land for Camp Trexler Scout Camp in 1927.Burger said he had four more draft articles for the proposed history book.Anna Pepe and Jodi Venturino brought a "kit" of samples of items that can be printed with the townships' logos. Among the samples are blankets, shirts, jackets, mugs, lip balms, commemorative coins, shopping bags that could have a logo on front and sponsors' names on back and reflective vests.The prices are affected by quantities, said Pepe. There was interest in getting something inexpensive with the logos for giveaways.A website contract has been completed with PenTeleData. Burger's son is working on the site. It will have links to each of the four townships.Site names will be chestnuthill250.org and chestnuthillmonroehistoricalsociety.org. There will be 10 mailboxes which will be assigned to different people.Burger has been attending meetings of the Monroe County Historic Coalition which meets quarterly. The coalition is trying to put together a book with historical information and wants local items by Dec. 1. Members are to bring suggestions to the Sept. 20 meeting of the Chestnuthill anniversary committee.He has been contacting car dealerships to find costs for a car to raffle as a fundraiser.Dave Fleetwood said they should decide on standards of values for levels of sponsorships. Suggested were $5,000, $1,000, $500, $250 and $100. Both these levels and sponsorship gifts were tabled until the next meeting. A brochure will be put together explaining what is being done for the anniversary.Burger will attend a Pleasant Valley School Board meeting to get permission to hold a logo contest.Event ideas include attending the Ross Community Day, inviting community members to the 2013 annual picnic, the Eldred Halloween parade and a cemetery walk on Oct. 20 or 27, 2012.
