There were showers all over the area yesterday Kidder Township, Allentown, Northampton but all that rain stayed away from the Carbon County Fair until late evening.

As a result, all activities went on as scheduled and there was good attendance. And that made last night a successful evening as the fair, located along Little Gap Highway near Palmerton, hit its half-way mark.Heavy rain this morning, and the prediction of rain for tonight, has put a crimp into the fair schedule.Alicia Silliman fair spokesman, said because of the weather, the fair is canceled today.An extra day will be added to the fair. Instead of ending Saturday, the fair will continue until Sunday.A demolition derby scheduled for tonight will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. It will feature large and compact cars and a grand finaleThere also will be a ride special Sunday from 1-8 p.m.Live entertainment will be featured on Sunday.Last night, the band Crazy Hearts played on stage to several hundred people, while line dancers did their thing.On the main stage, professional wrestlers proceeded to beat each other up to the delight of their fans.In the 4-H arena, there was a costume show featuring livestock.Smokey Bear walked around the midway greeting kids, many toddlers who likely perceived him as a large, soft Teddy Bear.Buster the Clown also proved a treat for the youngsters, making flowers, animals, and other creations from balloons.Robert Silliman, president of the fair, said that so far this week, "It's been incredible. We've had incredible weather so far. We've had threats but no rain. We've had good attendance."Saturday should be rain-free, according to forecasters.A "Country Spectacular" occurs tomorrow with five bands participating. Silliman said that for a grand finale, on the last show, all the bands will join for a jam session. More details appear on page 19.Silliman said he's delighted that there are so many food vendors."You cannot eat your way through this place no matter how hard you try," he laughed, adding, "Believe me, I've tried."Some of the new food vendors are Roadie's Prize Winning Chicken Wings, stuffed pretzels (which Silliman said, "People are raving about."), Linda's Barbecue, oriental food, and fresh lemonade.The participation by 4-H clubs has also impressed Silliman, who said there is more livestock at the fair than ever before. He said the fair plans to expand next year to accommodate the youths.Six children left the fair with new bicycles last night. The bikes were donated by Gothard Realty, Tom Zimmerman IV of Zimmerman's Dairy, and Baltimore Life.Winners of a free drawing for the bikes were:• Ages 0-3: Girl's, Daphne Gowin of Lehighton. Boy's, Sean Bachert of Millersville, Md.The threat of rain last night didn't deter Pat Vogel and his wife and two small children from coming to the fair from Northampton."We enjoy this fair," Pat said. "I'm glad it didn't rain. We come to ride the rides, eat, and enjoy the farm animals. It's a really nice fair."
